About the Mattress
Is the “Premium Choice” of Douglas Worth Buying?

Douglas advertises their Summit mattress as the premium choice offering more cooling, comfort, and thicker memory foam, but is it too good to be true? Our sleep testers discovered that Douglas Summit has an enveloping feel which may cause discomfort to a wide range of sleepers, and does not wick away heat and moisture as we expected.

The mattress cover pills easily and can become a nuisance for sleepers. Our off-gassing tests came to a shocking 55-day duration, compromising the freshness of the mattress for the first two months post-purchase.

For a more cooling, comforting, and cozy feel, we recommend you consider The Casper instead.

Product Details
Douglas Summit is a medium-soft mattress made with 3 layers of memory foam, covered by a machine-washable cover that claims to provide a cooling sensation. Although the memory foams of the Summit are denser than their other counterparts, it does not necessarily provide more comfort than the Original or the Alpine. The mattress offers a 365-night trial to test it out, and a 20-year warranty, which were by far the only advantages to investing in this mattress.

We reviewed Douglas Summit on 4 key areas:

Construction

1. Douglas CoolSense® Cover + CryoFusion™ Cooling Nanofibres

The machine-washable cover is made with cooling-infused nanofibers meant for temperature regulation.

2. 2.5” ecoLight® Cooling Gel Foam + Polar® Temperature Balancing

A layer of cooling-gel-infused memory foam meant to regulate temperature.

3. 2.5” Premium Elastex® Foam

Body-contouring memory foam.

4. 7” Motion Isolation Support Foam

Foundational support foam.

Although Douglas Summit’s construction focuses mainly on providing cooling capabilities and reducing motion transfer, our sleep testers found the mattress to perform quite underwhelmingly.

Performance

Top Sleep Picks works with third parties to test mattresses and uses public data to inform ratings across various criteria.

Firmness

Our sleep tests indicated Douglas Summit to be on the medium-soft side. Even though Douglas claims to be medium-firm and aims to cater to a wide range of sleepers, the lack of firmness of this mattress will likely cause neck and back pains for the back, stomach, and heavy sleepers. Side sleepers may benefit from the softness; however, they will experience some sinking feeling.

Edge Support

Douglas Summit’s edge support was inadequate for most sleep testers as they kept slipping and falling off the bed. This can be a concern for those who seek a durable mattress with long-lasting support. Unless your goal is to purchase a short-term mattress for children or vacation homes, we would steer clear of this one.

Motion Isolation

During testing, we saw the Douglas Summit have some motion transfer, indicating the mattress’s motion absorption is somewhat lacking. Our test showed movement caused vibrations across the mattress’ surface, indicating you will experience significant interruptions to your sleep if you sleep with a partner or a pet.
